ptab2The Chet Atkins Style (Fingerpicking Country-Jazz)Lucas HolmgrenLucas Holmgrenÿ Chet Atkins (1924-2001) Is arguebly one of the best guitarists to walk the earth, learning his style is a must for any guitarist. It can best be done using a thumbpick and 3 fingers, and by more practice then you or your grandma can handle. I hope this lesson does something for your playing, if not, I'm no John Knowles. The songs are mostly in A because it seemed like Chet did alot of stuff in A. A- Chet uses his thumb for the bass notes on altrenating bass, the three top notes are picked with the indexr, middle, and ring finger, deaden the bass notes by laying your hand at the bridge for a nice thumping bass sound. It sounds even better on an electric guitar with reverb. This sounds simple but may take some practice, it gets harder when you start picking a melody. B- This is where you it gets hard, but remember, if you get this down you can play thousands of songs for the most part. I just kind of made this tune up as I went along, dont expect a incredibly awesome thumbstyle tune, because IT ISNT! Anyway I just made one to show some basic licks and etc. The bass should always be moving up and down, remember to keep that bass muted, and don't get lost on the timing, start over. It should be a nice little routine of bass-chord-bass-chord, etc. But you have to have a melody entangled in there. Over all, this is the most noticeable Chet Atkins style, and is used on many songs such as, Mister Sandman, Swedish Rhapsody, Im Forever Blowin Bubbles, and so on. C- Chet did some great solos so i cant even attempt to emulate them so i just threw together some licks two of which are very hard and I'm still struggling to get the down, D/E- lick D is too hard to explain and the same with lick E so figure it out yourself. Just kidding though I honestly cant tell you much except do sweep picking up and down. I geuss I havent really studied Chets solos enough to learn the way he did all of it. I'll show a few more licks though. F- Random Licks in C, the first of which is a classic thumbstyle movement from c down to A7, to F# something to G then back to good old C. The second lick is a little more complicated but is a great ending for the key of C. I dont know how to show right ahnd fingering so.....sorry. Try your best. The third lick is a simple intro for C G- I still dont know how to do those awesome descending artificial harmonic scales but here are some quick transcriptions of a part in Cascade that I usuall just imprivise a little until the harmonic part is done because i cant get the harmonics to sound out right. This is so hard! Thers more but i cant teach it so I'm sorry once again. H- These are great Chords that Chet used in alot of his songs, LEARN 'EM! They are useful! I- These scales are good for improvisation. This is the end of my lecture, I hope i did something besides waste youre time, send comments, suggestions to guitarpicker9@hotmail.com.
